Naby Camara Bio:

From the village of Kanteli in the coastal region of Guinea, West Africa, comes the virtuoso and master balafon player Naby Camara. Born into the griot tradition, Naby's musical journey took him into the griot lands of West Africa during his formative years. After studying extensively with his master Amadou Dioubate, Naby journeyed into Mali, Gambia, Senegal, Guinea-Bissau, Sierra Leone, and Cote d'Ivoire absorbing musical traditions to broaden and to diversify his musical as well as his personal knowledge.Several years later Naby returned to Guinea as an accomplished and well-traveled musician armed with a wide repertoire of griot music and incomparable experience on intricate complexities of the balafon. Naby soon evolved as one of the most versatile players in Guinea, performing with such groups as Les Merveilles de Guinee, Bala etses Baladins, Les Ballets Africains de Guinee, and Mande Yagha. From traveling the world with Les Ballets Africains de Guineee and Fatala (which was based in Amsterdam and recorded for Peter Gabriel's Real World label) Naby gained international notoriety as a master balafon player. His innovative balafon playing shows a continuous plan the new and old, modern and traditional music. Countless collaborations with great griot musicians such as Prince Diabate and Ousmane Kouyate (an original member of Salif Keita's band), and participation in Le Bicentenaire de la Revolution in France, further demonstrate Naby's great talent as a musician. He is also the two-time winner of Canada's Juno Award for best Global Album of the Year, with the group Takaja in 1995, and for his playing on the top-selling African Guitar Summit album in 2004.Naby currently makes his home in Seattle, Washington, USA, where he performs with his group Lagni Sussu (loosely translated as black and white people living together).

From our Press Release:

The goal of this weekly is to foster a sense of community in the World music scene here in Seattle and to offer a weekly gathering place for those involved in or fans of World music in the region.  We believe that Seattle has a thriving World community and are excited to bring the Musicquarium into the fold.  The Triple Door itself has long-since been an avid supporter of African music, culminating in King Sunny (& his African Beats) joining with KEXP last June to deliver the very first live-radio broadcast from our stage, a smashing success.

Often AFROCENTRIC will partner up with appropriate Triple Door main stage acts to offer a pre and post lounge component to the evening. The first such event took place on Tuesday, March 16th with Bassekou Kouyate in conjunction with his, and the very first, release on Sub Pop’s new imprint “Next Ambiance,” a world-focused label that takes its name as a transmutation of Jon Kertzer’s pioneering show on KEXP, “Best Ambiance.”

About Message From Guinea:

United in their passion for sharing their culture on a global level, Message From Guinea is a group of extraordinary Seattle-based West African artists who have come together to spread a message of joy, unity, and transformation.   Employing powerful rhythms, hi-energy dances, and melodic songs steeped in the rich cultural heritage of their home country of Guinea, West Africa, Message From Guinea opens hearts, ignites passion, and enlivens audiences. These formidable artists grew up living their musical tradition, as Guinea is one of the few places left in Africa where indigenous drumming and dance traditions are still woven into everyday life.

They began dancing competitively as children, received training from cultural luminaries such as Kemoko Sano, and grew into artists of the highest caliber, touring the world with top companies such as the internationally-renowned Les Ballets Africains, Guinea’s national company.  Their authenticity is evident in their art.

Guinea is the birthplace of many African percussive instruments, including the increasingly popular djembe from the Mande region, and the krin, or “African telephone” from Guinea’s forest region.  These instruments have historically served the role of calling people together for important occasions- births, deaths, planting and harvesting of crops, the arrival of kings, the initiation of battle and the launch of the hunt.  Message From Guinea fuses sacred tradition with modern sensibility; with virtuosity and charisma, they call their audience to join in the essence of Guinea’s cultural legacy.

YAAMBA MARIMBA ENSEMBLE

Formed in the late 80's, YAAMBA marimba ensemble has played about every type of gig imaginable.  Musically rooted in traditional African music arranged and played on the mbira and later adapted to marimba, YAAMBA takes delight in playing and often switch instruments to share the lead story among many of the band members while the others support the lead by playing soprano, tenor, baritone and bass marimbas.

YAAMBA owes deeply felt thanks to many people for bringing us to our music.  Among them are Dumisani Mairare, from Zimbabwe, and his students and our teachers Larry Israel, Claire Jones, and Sheree Seretse, and countless others too!  It has been a long time since full blowin' marimba has been heard in music clubs.  Remember the likes of the Bombay Bicycle Club in Pioneer Square and the Bistro back in the U-District?  It's right time to hear it again, NOW at the Triple Door.  The groove is back and dancing brings you closer to the spirits, come on down Seattle and find out why YAAMBA has been at it this long.

Portland Cello Project “The Holiday party with Special Guests”

Genre: Classic Rock , Fusion , Pop

  1. Sunday, December 19 7:30 PM (All ages)

The first time you see the Portland Cello Project perform you might be perplexed when you hear affectionate fans shouting "We Love PCP!"

In spite of a barrage of musical and visual sensory overload, you'll figure out that you aren't in a crowd of horse-tranquilizer-snorting maniacs, and that "PCP" is the tongue-in-cheek acronym of this group of classically trained cellists.

But you'll wonder what kind of a crowd this is? In the course of one of PCP's epic 2-3 hour shows (the format of which is always a one-time affair the group writes almost entirely new arrangements for every performance cycle) you'll see such sights as: old ladies, straight out of the symphony hall nodding their head to cello hip-hop; young children playing air cello while dancing to 16 cellos accompanying The Builders and The Butchers; hipsters too-cool-for-school mesmerized by Arvo Paert; members of the Decemberists playing late 19th century Russian compositions transcribed for Hammond Organ, a 40-piece choir, and of course: a symphony of cellos.

Since the group's inception in late 2007, they have performed with a veritable "Who's Who?" list of Portland musicians, from Laura Gibson to The Dandy Warhols, Horse Feathers, Mirah and Loch Lomond, just to name a few.

The cello is more-or-less the only constant in this amorphous collective from Portland, Oregon. Yet there is an organizer holding this anarchic display of controlled chaos together. You'll see him sitting in the back row of the cello section at all of these shows, as if to appear an anonymous member of the horde. This is Douglas Jenkins. Jenkins, who often pens15-20 new scores for each performance, has led the band through two previous CD's of original songs and covers, and has been at the heart of the band's rise to immense popularity in their hometown.

The group's newest full-length is being released on June 9th, 2009 on their new label, local independent Kill Rock Stars. This CD and indeed the relationship forged with this well-suited record label embodies the group's belief that "collaboration is the cornerstone of independence and artistic freedom." Two of the artists who have collaborated with PCP: Thao Nguyen of Thao With The Get Down Stay Down and local musician Justin Power, contribute four songs each to this CD, the Thao and Justin Power Sessions. And the other four songs on the record are strategically placed examples of cello sublimity and madness: from a Pantera cover, to a solemn religious piece by John Tavener.

Although it's no longer an anomaly for popular musicians to work with an orchestra, it tends to be on the symphony's terms, in the symphony's concert halls, and for the symphony's exclusive rates. The classically trained cellists of The Portland Cello Project are working to reverse that tradition by making their talents accessible to their guests wildest dreams, while bringing the instrument into venues where you wouldn't normally see cellos. With this in mind, the group will be touring throughout 2009, bringing their collaborative philosophy to a dirty punk club near you!

The Grammy Winning Turtle Island Quartet - Northwest Premiere of new Hendrix Program

Genre: Classic Rock , Classical , Fusion , Jazz

Have You Ever Been...?- 10-11-12

the music of JIMI HENDRIX and DAVID BALAKRISHNAN

Through their exploration of jazz, classical, American vernacular and world music styles, the Turtle Island Quartet has taken its audiences on a journey through many musical genres, eras, and places – the American landscape, Latin America, Europe, and India to name a few. Now the two time GRAMMY®-winning quartet ventures to Electric Ladyland, tackling works by legendary guitarist, songwriter and performer Jimi Hendrix, as well as other compositions reflective of and inspired by Hendrix’s music including TIQ founder David Balakrishnan’s new composition “Tree of Life.”

In addition to a suite of four Hendrix pieces taken from his seminal Electric Ladyland album, other highlights include a solo cello rendition of Hendrix’s “Little Wing,” by co-founder/cellist Mark Summer, “To Bop Or Not To Be” by English jazz fusion guitarist/composer John McLaughlin (who famously jammed with Hendrix the year before he died), and the Hendrix version of “Hey Joe,” given a slower, more ballad-like treatment but still with a rock beat. The four movement string quartet version of “Tree Of Life” uses the Darwinian archetype as an entry point into the signature cross-genre synthesis that has been the career defining imperative for Balakrishnan, who himself considers Jimi Hendrix to be one of his prime musical influences.
