Forever Growing

Genre: Fusion , Rock

  1. Friday, September 06 9:00 PM (21+)

Since forming in 2006 Forever Growing has blazed its own trail in the category of JEDM (Jam Electronic Dance Music). Not afraid of taking risks to achieve something out of the ordinary has led to a cult audience that likes to listen as much as they like to dance. While the members, Andrew Becker (guitar/samples) and Adam Sweet (drums/samples), are both schooled in the jazz/blues tradition they draw equal influence from world, EDM, Rock, and funk genres to make for an incredibly interesting show that cannot be imitated. If you love new music this is one act you do not want to miss.

Geoffrey Castle

Genre: Big Band Revival , Celtic , Rock

  1. Saturday, June 15 8:00 PM (All ages)

RSVP ON FACEBOOK

Geoffrey Castle is a pioneer on the electric six-string violin. From his beginnings as a street musician in New York City and Paris, he rose to play in the Tony Award winning Broadway production of M. Butterfly. A theme of Castle's career is to destroy people's pre-conceived notions of what is possible on a violin, which he does every time he takes the stage. A bandleader and solo artist—with several critically acclaimed releases on his own Twisted Fiddle Music label—Geoffrey Castle has also managed to share stages with an illustrious group of musicians including Blues Traveler, all of the original and current members of Heart, Buddy Miles, and Alan White of Yes.

Alan White recently tapped Castle to be a member of the All-Star group the White Sox with Bernt Bodal; in this group Castle adds his violin pyrotechnics to the considerable talents of folks like Spike Edney (Queen), Jamie Moses (Queen, Bad Company), Tom Bowes (Tower of Power), Eric Bazilian (the Hooters), and many many more.

As a show producer and band leader, Castle loves to bring this wide diversity of musical styles to his high-energy Celtic Celebrations. With a core band that includes Darin Watkins and Eric Robert, this power trio creates a sound that is as unique as it is crowd pleasing. (You can see video footage of this trio in action.) Special guests at the celebrations have included Alan White, Bernt Bodal, Beth Quist (Cirque du Soleil), and award winning Celtic dancers from the Comerford School of Irish Dance, and the nationally renowned Celtic trio the Gothard Sisters.

Castle's fresh approach to Celtic music is most evident on his latest release Streets of Inwood: Celtic Soul bringing a more urban, smooth, and bluesy approach to traditional Celtic material. Castle's solo debut, "Mist on the Mountain" was called "A pure, uncluttered masterpiece" by the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. With all the critical acclaim that Castle has received for his recordings, it is always live performance that continues to be the focus of Castle's career. Trying to capture the energy of the live show has become a new focus, with a live recording at the beautiful Triple Door theater in the works for 2010.

Grant Lee Phillips w/ Gerald Collier

Genre: Singer-songwriter

  1. Saturday, June 22 8:00 PM (All ages)

After spending his formative years in Stockton, CA, Grant-Lee Phillips headed to Los Angeles to study film. Finding himself beneath the spell cast by local bands like the Rain Parade and the Dream Syndicate, Phillips soon partnered with Stockton acquaintance Jeff Clark to form Shiva Burlesque. The band dissolved after two critically acclaimed records, and Phillips began writing and demoing under the Grant Lee Buffalo alias. Following several solo performances, he invited former bandmates Joey Peters and Paul Kimble to join him, and the trio signed to the Warner Bros subsidiary Slash Records in 1992.

Phillips' golden, honey-soaked voice had largely gone to waste in Shiva Burlesque, but the new band enabled him to step out as a singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Grant Lee Buffalo went on to release four very different LPs, although a cult following, several successful tours, and across-the-board critical acclaim (Phillips was voted Rolling Stone's Male Vocalist of the Year following the second LP) didn't translate into strong sales. Frustrated with his label's dead-on-arrival promotion, Phillips asked for his band to be released from their contract, and he was obliged. (It was erroneously reported that GLP had been dropped.) Phillips dissolved his band, anxious to forge a new path.

Greg Brown

Genre: Folk

  1. Sunday, October 13 7:30 PM (All ages)

One of the leading contemporary folk artists of the American Midwest, Brown's music reflects a poetic spirit while also sounding thoroughly down to Earth; his deep, craggy voice expresses quirky humor and the mysteries of life and love with equal skill, and over the course of a career that's spanned more than five decades, he's earned a passionate following for his heartfelt and uncompromising music.

Critic Josh Kun once described singer and songwriter Greg Brown as "a Midwestern existentialist hobo with a quick-draw mouth, a bloodied heart, and bourbon on his breath."

Half Acre Day

Genre: Indie , Rock

Many bands can boast of intricate arrangements, hook-laden melodies, precision instrumentation and four-part harmonies... but few can deliver the goods like HAD. This rag-tag ensemble has been perfecting their musical stew since (gasp) 1994.

These five guys (Matt K, Marty B, Matt C, Paul B, and Dusty H) expertly concoct a delicious musical stew with just the right balance of ingredients and seasonings... intricate arrangements, driving beats, lilting melodies, charming riffs, and soaring harmonies - with more hooks than your grandpa's tackle box.

Hapa

Genre: Hawaiian

RSVP ON FACEBOOK

Like the Hawaiian Islands themselves, HAPA's Pan-Polynesian music is an amalgam of infuences ranging from ancient genealogical chants to the strummed ballads of Portuguese fisherman, Spanish cowboys, and the inspired melodies and harmonies of the traditional church choirs of the early missionaries. Add to this a dose of American acoustic folk/rock, and you have what has been described as the “most exciting and beautiful contemporary Hawaiian music the world knows!”… (Maui Times).

These disparate ingredients blended together musically in the Pacific emotes the unique flavor of what Hawaii and HAPA music is: “beautiful, fragile, spiritual, powerful”… (L.A. Times).

Often encapsulated as the “Sound of Maui”, HAPA’s music evokes a place that many people at different times have referred to as heavenly. The overriding quality of their music is one of beauty and serenity, found in the majestic tones of the oli (chant), mele (song), the elegant movements of the sacred dance known as hula, and the exhilarating innovative sounds of virtuoso slack key guitar. HAPA’s self entitled debut cd released in 1993, swept the 1994 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards (Hawaii’s equivalent of the Grammy’s), becoming the biggest selling CD by a group or duo in the history of recorded Hawaiian music. The group’s ground breaking music has established them as the most recognized name in Hawaiian music internationally since their debut release, with sold-out shows from Tokyo to New York.
