Happy Hour: Amber Navran

Genre: Jazz Vocalist , Saxophonist , Singer-songwriter

Amber Navran is a multi-faceted young composer who brings new meaning to the phrase "singer songwriter."  Orininally an instrumentalist, she has been playing saxophone and clarinet for 8 years, and is currently attending the University of Southern California as a Jazz Studies major. While in Los Angeles, she started to explore composition and, what started with one jazz standard, became a long list of original material with influences varying from Iron and Wine, and Madeleine Peyroux, to D'Angelo, and Stevie Wonder.

Happy Hour: Amy Bleu

Genre: Folk Rock , Indie

"There's something about Amy Bleu that's just a bit disquieting even as it is wholly inviting and entertaining. A coquettish singer with a flair for the theatrical, Bleu radiates some kind of underlying mischief or darkness. So, while she's up there doing a nice quirky little number on the ukulele, you know there's more to her than rainbows and butterflies. It's a compelling sensation for a listener." - Pat Muir, On Magazine, Yakima

Happy Hour: An American Forrest w/ Patrick W. McHenry

Genre: Americana , Roots Rock

  1. Thursday, June 20 5:00 PM (21+)

An American Forrest is a Ballard-via-rural-Washington State songwriting project founded by Alex Forrest VanTuyl and committed to the development and promotion of the Impressionist Americana aesthetic form. VanTuyl’s initial forays into Impressionism began in June, 2012, during a series of feverish hallucinations in Essaouira, Morocco, while listening to Gnaoua trance music and attempting to accurately recall middle class, rural, 21st century America. The form was further developed on a small farm in the southern Alps as a reconciliation of the ideas proposed in Melville’s Moby Dick and a French biography of Paul Cezanne. Upon returning to the United States, VanTuyl relocated to Seattle and enlisted upright bassist Johnny Wade, organist Charles Wicklander, and drummer Heather Thomas to more effectively pursue the Impressionist Americana aesthetic. They are currently working on an EP to be released summer of 2013. Forrest VanTuyl’s pre-Moroccan solo work can be found at americanforrest.bandcamp.com

Happy Hour: Ari Shine/Adrienne Pierce

Genre: Singer-songwriter

Ari Shine is quickly becoming the singer-songwriter to watch in 2011. He plays rootsy rock with an eye for lyrical detail and an ear for classic pop song-craft. The heartfelt melodies and unfiltered lyrics he delivers retain the same unabashed hooks and energy whether in solo acoustic performance or with full band backing.

Adrienne Pierce finds a way to sing about ugly things in the most beautiful way." She is "the go-to girl for a smart shot of catchy-meets-cutting tracks for thoughtful listeners".  Adrienne's songs have been heard on many shows such as Grey's Anatomy, and Veronica Mars.

Happy Hour: Ayron Jones (solo)

Genre: Blues , Guitarist , Soul

Some people have said that it takes decades of experience and pain to play blues music like the legends of old but Seattle’s Ayron Jones has proven himself to be the exception. Jones, 25, has the ability to make a room sexy like Muddy Watters’ “Mannish Boy,” and then at the blink of an eye he strangles your ear drums with all of the ferocity of Stevie Ray Vaughan. Jones has taken his affinity for modern rock, punk, blues, hip-hop, soul and gospel, then baptized it in the guitar styles of Buddy Guy, Albert King and Vaughan. The result is a born-again style of blues tailored for the next generation.

Happy Hour: Bakelite 78

Genre: Americana , Blues

Bakelite 78′s repertoire is an eclectic mix of swing, Dixieland, blues, proto-country, and cabaret, as well as a plethora of originals in hybrids of these styles.  Founding member Robert Rial arrived in Chicago in 2000, eager to engage in the music he loved most: dance orchestra music/swing, country-blues, dixieland, tin pan alley, rock and American folk. He played his guitar and tenor banjo and took solace in his 78 R.P.M. records (some discs were made from an early form of plastic similar to Bakelite). “Bakelite 78′s” preserved the music of the early 20th Century, and the band was born to keep classic crooner vocals & speak-easy jazz/lounge/cabaret alive.
